Homeschooling while working, and enrolling from outside South Africa

Two questions that come up constantly from families weighing up the move.

“I work. Can this actually be done?”

Yes, and a great many Saving Grace families are in exactly that position. What makes it workable is that the lessons are pre-recorded — there is no class at 09:00 that your child must attend and you must supervise. The work can be done around your hours.

What you still have to provide is structure. In practice the families who make it work tend to:

• Fix the order of the day rather than the clock — see building a routine that survives a bad week
• Check progress on Canvas daily, even briefly, rather than discovering a problem at the end of term
• Protect the deadlines for formal assessments, which are not flexible even though the daily pace is

Parents have access to daily progress reports, which is what makes checking in quick rather than an interrogation.

“We are not in South Africa”

International learners are welcome, provided they maintain online access and meet the curriculum requirements. Two things to think about before enrolling:

• Which curriculum. If the family is likely to stay abroad, Cambridge is usually the better fit than CAPS. See which curriculum is right for your child.
• Examinations. Final SACAI matric examinations are written in person at an approved SACAI examination centre. If you are outside South Africa and heading for an NSC matric, raise this with the school early rather than in Grade 12.
