Reading Booster Programme
A child who cannot read at grade level cannot access any curriculum, whichever one you choose. Reading is the subject underneath every other subject, and a gap here shows up two years later as a maths problem, a science problem and a confidence problem.
What the programme is
Learning to Read is a CAPS-aligned reading programme for Grades R to 3, with a Reading Booster for Grades 4 to 6 who need to catch up. Lessons are interactive and self-paced, and read aloud from the very first one — which is the point: a child who cannot yet read can still work through it independently.
Children learn letters, sounds, phonics, blending and comprehension through play. Every lesson is hands-on — listening, tapping, tracing, speaking, reading. They never just watch a video.
One thing to be clear about
Learning to Read is a separate Saving Grace product. It has its own site, its own sign-up and its own subscription. You do not need to be enrolled in a Saving Grace curriculum to use it, and it is not included in a homeschool fee. The first two lessons of every grade are free, so you can see whether it fits before paying for anything.
What to discuss here
How to tell a real reading gap from a slow start. What a Grade 4 learner reading at Grade 2 level actually needs. Whether to run a reading programme alongside the curriculum or pause and rebuild first. How long catching up honestly takes — and it is usually longer than parents hope and shorter than they fear.
Details, grade coverage and the free lessons are on Learning to Read.
