What does a realistic homeschool day actually look like?

One of the most common surprises for new homeschooling parents is how little of the day is spent doing what looks like school.

A class of thirty needs registers, transitions, settling, repetition for different paces, and behaviour management. One child at a kitchen table needs almost none of that. Families often find the academic work takes far less time than a school day, and that this is not a sign anything is wrong.

The harder part is usually everything around it: starting on time, handling the child who will not begin, fitting it around work, and protecting your own patience.

• How long does focused work actually take, honestly?
• What do you do about the days it falls apart?
