Special Needs CAPS

Special Needs CAPS is the national curriculum with the barriers removed. Grades R to 12, working toward the same formal outcomes as any other CAPS learner, with a SACAI-registered pathway through the FET Phase — which means a matric at the end of it.

What is built in

These are part of the programme rather than something you apply for case by case:

  • Extra time.
  • A scribe.
  • Text-to-speech on the platform.
  • Assessments available in audio format.
  • Untimed assessments — your child is judged on what they know, not how fast they can write it.

Who it is for

The learner who can do the work but needs the obstacles taken out of the way to prove it. If your child understands the material when you read the question aloud and give them time, this is almost certainly the right conversation to be having.

It is also the answer for a child who has been stuck on standard CAPS for years with little progress, where the difficulty is in demonstrating knowledge rather than acquiring it.

What it leads to

The same National Senior Certificate as any other CAPS learner. That is the whole point of it, and it is what separates this pathway from the purpose-built Special Needs programme, which runs to Grade 10 and leads into a skills or artisan path instead.

Note that accommodations built into the school programme are not automatically the same as concessions granted for an external matric examination, which has its own application, its own evidence requirements and its own deadlines. Ask specifically what carries through — and read exam concessions and accommodations, because families routinely start that process a year too late.

Not sure this is the right one?

  • Your child needs a programme designed for how they learn, not the mainstream one adapted → Special Needs Curriculum
  • The problem is a gap in what was learned rather than a barrier to showing it → Remedial CAPS

Details and fees for the Special Needs CAPS programme are on the main Saving Grace site.
