Tutoring

Sometimes a child needs a person, not another explanation. This forum is where families discuss additional one-to-one and small-group support: when it is genuinely needed, what to look for, and what to expect from it.

When tutoring is the right answer

It usually is not the first answer. A child who is disengaged across every subject rarely needs a tutor — they need the pace, the timetable or the curriculum changed. Tutoring earns its cost when the problem is narrow and identifiable: one subject, one phase, a specific foundation that never got laid, or an exam year where the stakes have risen.

What to work out before you pay for anything

  • Diagnose first. "Bad at maths" is not a diagnosis. Which topic, which grade did it start, and does it survive when the reading load is removed?
  • Agree what success looks like and by when, before the first session, not after the tenth.
  • Ask about the curriculum. A tutor teaching a different sequence from your child's programme can add confusion rather than remove it.
  • Set an end point. Good tutoring works itself out of a job. Open-ended arrangements quietly become a permanent line item.

Share what has worked here — including what has not, which is usually more useful. For what Saving Grace itself provides and how support is structured within the school, see how the school works, or ask the office directly.
