CAPS Curriculum

CAPS — the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement — is South Africa's national curriculum, the same one taught in most schools in the country. Saving Grace delivers it online from Grade R to Grade 12, in English or Afrikaans, with accredited termly assessments and a report card each term.

What a CAPS week actually looks like

Your child works through video lessons and worksheets on their own timetable rather than a fixed school day. The materials are released so the year can be planned around, which is why CAPS at home suits working parents better than most people expect. Assessment is continuous: tasks and tests through the year, not one examination at the end of it.

Who it suits

CAPS is the default for a reason. If there is any chance your child returns to a mainstream South African school, this is the curriculum that transfers without a translation exercise. It is also the pathway to a National Senior Certificate in the FET Phase, and Saving Grace is SACAI-registered for Grades 10 to 12.

It suits a child working at or near grade level. If your child has slipped a year or more behind, read Remedial CAPS before you enrol — putting a struggling learner into mainstream pacing and hoping is the most common expensive mistake in home education. If the difficulty is showing what they know rather than knowing it, read Special Needs CAPS instead.

What parents ask most

  • How much do I have to teach myself? Less than you fear — the lessons are taught. Your job is the timetable and the accountability.
  • Can we do Afrikaans as home language? Yes; CAPS is delivered in English and Afrikaans.
  • Can my child do CAPS for some subjects and Cambridge for others? Placement is per subject as well as per curriculum — ask here, or ask the office.

For the full subject lists, grade availability and fees, see the CAPS Online Homeschool programme on the main Saving Grace site.
