Homeschooling while working: how are you making it fit?

Plenty of Saving Grace families are running a homeschool and a job at the same time. It is one of the most common reasons parents come to online, self-paced learning in the first place — and it is genuinely hard.

Some approaches families use:

• Front-loading the morning — the demanding subjects early, while concentration is best, leaving the afternoon for work that needs less supervision.
• Blocking rather than spreading — two long subject blocks a week instead of daily short ones, which suits self-paced learning better than a school timetable does.
• Independence as the actual goal — deliberately teaching a child to start without being told, because every year that gets easier is a year that gets survivable.
• Sharing the load — swapping supervision with another homeschooling family, or splitting subjects with a partner along lines of who can actually stand teaching them.
